The Star Gazing Hare is the latest addition to my collection of colourful hares.
Each Hare is approximately 30cm tall and 8cm wide. Made from ceramic stoneware.
Star Gazing was inspired by the recent blanket of colourful northern lights that adored part of the skies over Ireland. I wondered what the hares made of the amazing glow from the sky!! No doubt they’ve seen all sorts of skies since their time in Ireland which dates back to the ice age. Correctly known as Lepus timidus hibernicus, a subspecies of the Arctic mountain hare, it is the oldest mammal on this island. The beautiful timid creature has captured the imagination of poets like Seamus Heaney in the Names of the Hare; Jackie Gorman’s the Blue Hare; and Paula Meehan’s Island Burial along with a long list of celtic tales and myths.
I’ve created hares in many forms. A life-like sculpture hare was auctioned for the Alice Leahy Trust in 2019. The hare was a fitting match for Alice as she supports homeless people in Dublin. As we know the hare is also ‘homeless’ fleeting from scrub to scrub.
